As someone who’s business model is absolutely up-ended by AB5 in California, I have a bias against anyone criticizing the gig economy. I’m glad that the resolution of this article was more about finding a way to make the gig economy work in a fair way, because once people get a taste of the flexibility and freedom they could have, it is really hard to go back to a 9-5 slog, or especially retail work. Like it or not, unions, the gig economy is the future, and if our government actually provided the safety net that we keep expecting employers to provide, it would be better for all gig workers.
