It’s funny, I think about the anniversary of this earthquake every year, but it seems nobody else really remembers. It was terrifying. I was 14 years old, and seeing the footage of the collapsed cypress section made me realize my own mortality in a way nothing else had; we actually drove over that very section of freeway once a week going to and from rehearsal. I also remember the feeling of community with the rest of the bay area; the feeling that we were all in this together. I desperately wanted to help somehow, and that’s the first time I remember feeling a sense of civic responsibility, too.
